VikingHome Leather and Dreamfibre Education

When you purchase a Natuzzi product from VikingHome you can choose either Leather or Dreamfibre. Both are available in a wide range of colors. Leather is selected from the best hides in the world and tanned in Italy. The revolutionary DreamfibreŽ is a superior ultramicrofiber that is velvety to the touch, durable and extremely practical. More information on Leather and Dreamfibre can be found below.

Leather
Not only is Leather more durable than coverings such as fabric, it even improves in appearance as the years pass. It's strong, flexible and naturally adapts to the shape of your body to offer the utmost comfort. Cool in summer and warm in winter, leather upholstery is easy to care for. Natuzzi offers two families of leather: Natural and Protected.

Natural
Extraordinarily soft and velvety, Natural leathers are treated to leave the original characteristics of the hides intact. Variations in grain, veining and color shade are the hallmarks of their beauty and are the most precious qualities of this noble material. Natural leathers are ideal for people who love the refined elegance of natural interiors.

Protected
Supple and strong, Protected leathers are coated with a thin protective film that shields them from stains and the signs of age without affecting their beauty. They are particularly suitable for active, fun-loving people and perfect for homes with children or pets.

VikingHome sells only premium, Top-Grain, aniline-dyed leather. (see the Glossary below for more information)
Grades of Leather
  • Leather is a natural material graded much like a diamond.
  • The fewer imperfections on the hide, the rarer and more expensive
Grade of Leather is Determined by Where the Hide was Raised

Higher Grades
  • Cooler climates (example: Northern Europe)
  • Fewer hides are raised in controlled pastures producing hides with few imperfections
Lower Grades
  • Hotter climates (example: South America)
  • Many hides are raised on an open range; producing hides that are weathered, scarred.
  • These imperfections must then be processed (buffed, sanded, or filled) before being dyed.

They combine original beauty, durability, washability, easy care and a velvet touch in your choice of brilliant colors. Glossary

  • Protected Leather - Resistant to stains and wear, these leathers are ideal for a dynamic, uninhibited use of the furniture.

  • Natural Leather - Soft and velvety, they retain their original characteristics and are ideal for people who love to surround themselves with precious, natural things.

  • Corrected Grain - Buffed or sanded to remove imperfections such as bites or scars in the grain.

  • Embossed Grain - A natural looking grain pattern formed by using a pressure plate.

  • Top-Grain - The top, outermost, strongest, most durable part of the hide. Very durable because there are no consistent fiber patterns along which the hide can tear. VikingHome sells only Top Grain leather.

  • Splits - The underneath layer of the hide that is tanned, dyed and embossed with a grain pattern.

  • Full Grain - The top grain of leather left in its natural state after splitting, including all natural markings without correction. It is a "pure" grain.

  • Aniline Dyed - Leather that has been dyed with aniline, a clear dye which permeates the entire hide. There is no pigment (paint) or finish put on pure aniline dyed leather to correct imperfections. That is why only the finest leathers can be used since they have to be in excellent shape.

  • Variations - Variations mean that within the same hide there may be different color shadings.

  • Stain Protection - A top coat that protects against the effects of light, soil, liquid, heat and abrasion.

  • Mottling - A light, controlled shading usually accomplished by adding a second color.
Leather Care
We suggest that if you are going to try any new cleaning method you do so first in a hidden area.

Spills
Wipe up any excess liquid immediately with a clean cloth or sponge. If necessary use lukewarm water and let the leather air-dry.

Spots and Stains
Apply a mild, non-detergent soap solution with a clean, wet sponge. Rinse and let air dry. Particularly bad spots may require a detergent solution, but care should be taken not to over do it.

Oil and Grease
Wipe the leather with a clean, dry cloth and let any remaining oil dissipate into the leather. Do not apply water or try to wash a grease spot.

Major Damage
There are specialized services that clean, condition, restore, repair and spot re-finish leather furniture in consumers' homes on a regular basis. Routine maintenance can extend the useful life of leather upholstery, keeping it clean and in top condition. Wearing, fading, and even extreme damage such as holes, cuts and burns can be repaired by skilled leather professionals

General Care

Cleaning and Maintenance Tips
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight
  • Remove any dust or dry stains with a vacuum cleaner every 10-15 days
  • Tackle any stains before they become too ingrained so abrasive and prolonged treatments are avoided
Furniture with Tight Fabric Covers
  • Blot stains with a soft, clean white cloth or absorbent paper towel
  • If solvents are required, avoid applying directly to the stain. It should be poured onto a clean cloth and any treatment should be tested first on a concealed area.
  • Clean stains using a circular motion working from the outside inward
  • After removing the stain, dry immediately using a hairdryer, again working from the outside inward
